February 16, 2023 - Texas Instruments (TI) (NASDAQ: TXN) today announced plans to build a second 12-inch semiconductor wafer fabrication facility in Lehi, Utah, USA. The facility is adjacent to TI's existing 12-inch wafer fabrication facility, LFAB, in the region, and when complete, the two facilities will operate as one wafer fabrication facility.
Haviv Ilan, the current executive vice president and chief operating officer who will take over as the president and CEO of Texas Instruments, said: "This new factory is part of our long-term plan for 12-inch wafer production capacity to meet the needs of customers for decades to come. Electronics Semiconductor demand for products, especially industrial and automotive markets, is expected to continue to grow in the future, and now is the perfect time for us to further expand our own manufacturing capabilities."
The new factory will manufacture tens of millions of analog and embedded processing chips every day, which are widely used in various electronic product fields in the global market.
The plant will be designed to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification, one of the LEED building ratings for structural efficiency and sustainability. The water reuse rate of the new plant is expected to be nearly double that of Lehi's existing plant. By adopting advanced 12-inch wafer manufacturing equipment and processes, the new factory will further reduce waste emissions and reduce water and energy consumption.
Construction of the new plant is expected to start in the second half of 2023, with production starting in 2026 at the earliest. The fab will join Texas Instruments' existing 12-inch wafer fabrication facilities, including DMOS6 in Dallas, Texas; RFAB1 and RFAB2 in Richardson, Texas; and LFAB in Lehi, Utah. Meanwhile, Texas Instruments is building four 12-inch semiconductor fabs in Sherman, Texas.
